The James Beard Foundation will announce its list of semifinalists today for the organization’s 2014 restaurant and chef awards. Called “the Oscars of the food world,” the Beard awards recognize chefs and restaurants in both national and regional categories.
Last year, Indianapolis had semifinalists in two national categories: Martha Hoover, in the Outstanding Restaurateur category, and Bluebeard, in the Best New Restaurant category. The founders of Munster’s Three Floyds Brewing Co. were also semifinalists in the national spirits and beer professional category.
Four area chefs made last year’s semifinalist list for best chef/Great Lakes region, which includes Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan: Regina Mehallick of R bistro, Greg Hardesty of Recess and Neal Brown of The Libertine Liquor Bar and Pizzology, all of Indianapolis, and David Tallent of Restaurant Tallent in Bloomington. Tallent has made the semifinalist list for seven consecutive years. The list of semifinalists will be announced today in Orlando, Fla. The “short list” of actual nominees will be announced March 18 in Chicago. The awards take place May 5 in New York City.
