Remember when George Munoz of La Chinita Poblana said when he closed the Broad Ripple taco shop that an opportunity came up that he just couldn’t pass up?
Well, that opportunity was to become an owner of Festiva.
Festiva founders Peter George and Tom Main approached him last fall, Munoz said, and he takes over operation of the 16th Street restaurant as of today.
“It wasn’t something I was looking for,” he said, “but I thought it was an interesting opportunity.”
George and Main remain minority partners, Munoz said, “but as far as management and everything, it’ll all be on me. It’s my show to run.”
Munoz will bring on a new kitchen staff including a sous chef from his days as managing partner at Adobo Grill, which he left in 2012 to open La Chinita Poblana. They’ll be changing up the Festiva menu in late January or early February, he said. And while you won’t see menu items from La Chinita Poblana, “there are going to be tacos that are just as damn good though.”
Festiva’s beverage director, noted bartender Jason Foust, will stay on, Munoz said.
“It’s a great little restaurant,” he said, “and it has great drinks. The bar program here is incredible.”
Munoz said he is looking forward to being at the restaurant and being part of the emerging 16th Street corridor.
“It needed somebody to be here running it day to day,” he said. “It’s a good fit for everybody.”
