It didn’t take long for customers to discover Caplinger’s Fresh Catch after it opened Dec. 26 at 7460 N. Shadeland Ave. “On New Year’s Eve there was literally a line out the door,” said Andrew Caplinger, who runs the new fish market with his wife, Courtney and father, Nick.
Those customers who are stopping in for the new shop’s fresh and prepared seafood remember the Caplingers from the 56th Street Fish Market, which they ran from 1993 until it closed in 2007. Although prices have certainly changed in the past seven years, customers have too, said Nick. “They’re more diverse,” he said.
Plus, said Andrew, they’re more interested in buying local. “One of the things that has really changed is the whole local thing,” he said. “In April, I’m going to be getting in Indiana-raised rainbow trout. I’ve already got the yellow perch, and it’s been very popular. I think we can help out with the whole Indiana aquaculture thing. That wasn’t an option before.”
In addition to as many local products as possible, Caplinger’s also stocks such items king crab legs, Australian and Canadian lobster tail and baby octopus. “You don’t find those at the grocery store,” said Andrew.
Caplinger’s Fresh Catch also offers cooked to order seafood, a popular clam chowder and house-made desserts. It’s open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more info, find Caplinger’s on Facebook.
